WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ) participated in a discussion at the Center for American Progress’s IDEAS Conference alongside former Secretary of State Antony Blinken and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield. The Senator advocated for recentering American foreign policy around resilience and highlighted the importance of strategy that’s responsive to the American people and can regain our credibility with global partners. WATCH THE FULL PANEL DISCUSSION During the panel entitled “The Future of American Foreign Policy” and moderated by MSNOW’s Jen Psaki, Senator Kim outlined the importance of: Rebuilding the United States as a reliable partner so that strategic advantages like U.S. chips manufacturing can drive global innovation and safeguard America’s competitive edge. “I want to just really throw out that sense of reliability, and how important that is, and how much we are struggling with it and why we will continue to struggle with it as a country even after Trump is gone. This is something we’re going to have to rebuild.” Building “an era of resilience” in this age of crisis. “I think we need to focus on an era of resilience in this age of crisis to be able to mobilize ourselves, to shore up our own vulnerabilities…While we are also trying to make sure that we are performing and fighting on the battlefields of our choosing and be able to advance on our strengths. So that’s what I think we need to be pushing forward on as we see this incredibly rapidly changing ecosystem that we are in.” Navigating “weapons of mass production” like drones and AI in order to strengthen U.S. military as well as our defensive capabilities. “I’m somebody that grew up in the era where we were concerned about weapons of mass destruction. Now we are finding ourselves in a place where we are trying to navigate these weapons of mass production… We do have to be thinking about it both in terms of the war fighter on our side, but also, how do you defend against this?” Reclaiming congressional authority over decisions of war and voice Americans’ overwhelming opposition to President Trump’s illegal war in Iran. “This is ultimately about the people. And this is ultimately about the impact that is having on them, and that this is a choice that this president made, not just to start a war or not, but whether to help American people or not. And that he has clearly made a decision to enrich himself and his family and his friends at the expense of the American people, and they see that so clearly when it comes to Iran.” Senator Kim has previously outlined seven resilience principals aimed at strengthening American foreign policy in the face of competition and change and build a path to opportunity.
