Clarke Reintroduces Real Political Ads Act to Strengthen Transparency in AI-Generated Political Advertising
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 15, 2026 MEDIA CONTACT: e: jessica.myers@mail.house.gov c: 202.913.0126 WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) reintroduced the REAL Political Ads Act , legislation to strengthen transparency and accountability in political advertising by requiring disclosure when generative artificial intelligence (AI) is used to create images or videos in political advertisements. A recent Quinnipiac poll found that 55 percent of Americans are concerned about the growing risks associated with artificial intelligence, and a recent Blue Rose Research poll found that 74 percent of voters believe AI-generated voices should be prohibited in political calls to protect transparency. Those concerns are compounded in the context of the Federal Communications Commission’s proposal to waive the federal ban on unsolicited AI-generated political robocalls, as well as in the widespread use of AI by the Trump Administration and across the political spectrum to attack political opponents and spread disinformation. “As generative AI technologies continue to evolve, clear disclosure standards to preserve transparency are essential to civic engagement. Unfortunately, Congress has failed to keep up the pace with this rapidly advancing technology, leaving voters vulnerable to AI-generated misinformation and disinformation,” said Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke. “This legislation would ensure voters know when political ads use AI-generated images and videos. If AI content can manipulate and deceive people on a large scale, it can be a serious threat to our democracy and have devastating consequences for our national and election security.” “Voters deserve to know that the election information that we read, watch, and listen to is honest. AI makes it far too easy for campaigns to create convincing content intended to mislead voters, and too often it’s at the expense of voters of color and other communities historically pushed to the margins. Congresswoman Clarke’s REAL Political Advertisements Act would help ensure that every voter can make informed decisions based on the facts,” said Alejandra Montoya-Boyer, Vice President of The Leadership Conference’s Center for Civil Rights and Technology. This legislation is co-sponsored by: Reps. Debbie Dingell (MI-06), Jim Costa (CA-21), Valerie Foushee (NC-04), and Adelita Grijalva (AZ-07). The full bill text can be found here . ###
