Cassidy Honors Veterans in Slidell
METAIRIE –U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) yesterday afternoon honored veterans and their families in Slidell during the community’s annual Veterans Appreciation Reception to thank them for defending America’s freedom.
“Today’s event celebrated being a veteran and serving our country. There is a camaraderie, even as veterans joke between the services,”said Dr. Cassidy.“They were living life as they lived their service to our country.”
As a member of the U.S. Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee (SVAC), Cassidy works to pass legislation that benefits veterans and their families. HisGold Star and Surviving Spouse Career Services Actpassed through the Senate earlier this month. The bill increases access to job counseling services for spouses of members of the Armed Forces who died on active duty. Cassidy also recently convened aSVAC field hearingin New Orleans to discuss how to improve mental health care services for veterans.
At the Veterans Appreciation Reception, retired officers from the Army and Navy also thanked those in attendance for their service. The presentation of the colors was conducted by Northshore High School’s ROTC unit, and a medley of patriotic songs was performed by the Knights of Columbus Regional Choir.
Cassidy was welcomed to the reception by Mr. Chuck Sabadie, the Chairman for the Veterans Appreciation Reception.
“Seventeen years ago, a group of community leaders inspired by a young sergeant home from Iraq began honoring veterans in Slidell,”said Mr. Sabadie.“We now have an annual reception with the support of the mayor, volunteers, and most importantly, our veterans. Every year we have guest speakers, and now a Member of Congress to personally acknowledge our veterans. We thank Senator Cassidy for his support and advocacy in Washington.”
