WASHINGTON – Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL) joined the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform for a full committee hearing entitled the “Oversight of the District of Columbia” to examine the D.C. Council’s soft-on-crime policies, the historic surge of juvenile crime in the nation's capital, law enforcement’s response to the escalating crime crisis, and general oversight of the District. The hearing follows recent action taken by the Oversight Committee to advance comprehensive legislation empowering D.C. law enforcement, tackling the escalating juvenile crime crisis, and codifying President Trump’s Executive Order to restore safety and beauty to the nation’s capital. Ms. Muriel Bowser–Mayor of the District of Columbia, Mr. Phil Mendelson–Chairman of the Council of the District of Columbia, and Mr. Brian Schwalb–Attorney General of the District of Columbia joined the committee to testify as witnesses. "So it seems that the President's surge was more effective than your own efforts wouldn't you say?": DONALDS: "How much has crime decreased since the President took action?" BOWSER: "I mentioned already the, and let me look at my numbers, uh, that the federal surge produced a 39% decrease in violent crime." DONALDS: "A 39% decrease in violent crime in the nation's capital." BOWSER: "Yes, and that's on top. Let me just add, that's on top of the 26% decrease that we were already experiencing." DONALDS: "So it seems that the President's surge was more effective than your own efforts wouldn't you say? Last time I checked, 39% is way higher than 26%." ###
