House Passes Matsui’s BILL to KEEP the Lights on, Strengthening America’s Energy GRID

June 29, 2026 Press Release WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-07) successfully passed the SECURE Grid Act in the House. The bill improves long-term planning for America’s electric grid, helping reduce costly outages, strengthen reliability during extreme weather, and keep electricity affordable for families in Sacramento and communities across the country. “Americans depend on reliable and affordable electricity for every aspect of our lives. Today’s passage of the bipartisan SECURE Grid Act is a major step toward building a stronger, more reliable power grid that prevents blackouts, protects communities from extreme weather, and keeps electricity affordable,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “Californians know all too well the dangers and challenges posed by extreme weather, and we can’t afford to wait until the next emergency to act. This bill takes a smarter approach by planning ahead, strengthening our energy infrastructure before problems occur, and helping ensure families across America have affordable power for years to come.” “America’s electric grid must be secure and resilient to ensure families and businesses have reliable access to affordable energy. From extreme weather to physical and cyber threats posed by our adversaries, protecting our nation’s energy infrastructure is a matter of national security,” said Congressman Latta. “That’s why I was proud to lead the SECURE Grid Act with Rep. Matsui. I thank Rep. Matsui for her partnership in advancing this bipartisan legislation through the House. Together, we are taking an important step to strengthen the resilience of our electric grid, helping Ohioans and Americans across the country access reliable, affordable energy and ensuring they can count on keeping the lights on.” Today’s House passage builds on the Congresswoman’s record of ensuring California’s power grid is ready for the challenges of the future. She previously co-authored the POWER ON Act, which was enacted as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and established the $10.5 billion Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) Program to help utilities and communities modernize critical grid infrastructure. This program has provided $50 million for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), $67 million for the State of California, and $630 million for the California Energy Commission. The SECURE GRID Act is backed by Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH) and Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), and is also endorsed by the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).
