Tlaib’s district in Michigan is home to a large Yemeni population Oct 19, 2026 Press WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) introduced a bill to restore temporary protected status for Yemen , which the Trump administration officially terminated in July, following a legal battle. Conditions in countries designated for TPS are too dangerous for people to return safely. Those who qualify for TPS are allowed to remain in the U.S. temporarily. Yemen is facing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises amid an ongoing civil war and foreign siege and military intervention, including the Trump administration’s bombing of the country last year. The Department of State has placed Yemen under a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory, citing violence, kidnapping, landmines and unexploded ordinances, as well as the re-emergence of diseases like cholera, polio, and measles. Michigan, especially Rep. Tlaib’s district, is home to large Yemeni communities. “The Trump administration is threatening our Yemeni neighbors, and I will not stand for it. DHS unjustly terminated temporary protected status for Yemen without care for the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe and escalating armed conflict facing the country,” said Rep. Tlaib. “The Trump administration was bombing civilians in Yemen as recently as last year and is currently trying to give the Saudi monarchy billions of dollars in bombs and jets to continue the devastation. The State Department explicitly warns against any travel to Yemen, and yet, this president wants to send our neighbors back as part of his racist mass deportation agenda. I am proud to represent one of the most Yemeni districts in the country. These are our family members, coworkers, friends, and neighbors. They belong here, and I will not turn my back on them.” In April, Rep. Tlaib led 23 Members of Congress in urging the Trump administration to halt its planned termination of TPS for Yemen. Conditions in the country have only deteriorated since then. The Yemen TPS Act is cosponsored by 14 Members of Congress: U.S. Reps. André Carson (IN-07), Jim Costa (CA-21), Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04), Jonathan L. Jackson (IL-01), Henry C. “Hank” Johnson, Jr. (GA-04), Timothy Kennedy (NY-26), Gwen Moore (WI-04), Seth Moulton (MA-06), Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC-at large), Ilhan Omar (MN-05), Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Lateefah Simon (CA-12), Shri Thanedar (MI-13), and Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12). The bill is also endorsed by 50 organizations: Adhikaar For Human Rights and Social Justice, African Communities Together (ACT), American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), Arab America, Arab American Family Support Center, Arab American Heritage Council (AAHC), Arab American Institute (AAI), Arkansas Community Organizations, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Center for Constitutional Rights, Center for Gender & Refugee Studies, Center for Nonviolent Solutions, Climate Refugees, Council on American-Islamic Relations, Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida, Families For Freedom, Flint Alliance for Immigrant Rights, Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR), Hindus for Human Rights Action, Houston Immigration Legal Services Collaborative, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Immigrant Defenders Law Center (ImmDef), Immigration Justice Action Team, Indivisible Mass Coalition, Justice Is Global, Kino Border Initiative, MADRE, Majdal: Arab Community Center of San Diego, Migrant Roots Media, Migrant Support Collective, Muslim Advocates, Muslims for Just Futures, National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, National Network for Arab American Communities (NNAAC), National Partnership for New Americans, Never Again Action, Nicaraguan American Legal Defense and Education Fund (NALDEF), NM CAFe (Comunidades en Accion y de Fe), No Concentration Camps US, No Detention Centers in Michigan, NorCal Resist, North Shore Sides With Love, Northern Indivisible, Oasis Legal Services, ReThinking Foreign Policy, RootsAction, Syrian Community Network, United We Dream Network, We are CASA, Yemen Relief and Reconstruction Foundation.
