As Kids Head Back to School in Nevada, Rosen Renews Push to Prevent Immigration Enforcement in Schools

WASHINGTON, DC– As the Nevada school year kicks off, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) is renewing her push to protect students and prevent immigration raids from taking place in or near schools and other sensitive locations. In February, Senator Rosen helped introduce theProtecting Sensitive Locations Actto prohibit immigration enforcement near sensitive locations like schools, hospitals, and churches. This legislation was introduced in response to the Trump Administrationrescindingprevious guidance that prohibited immigration enforcement in sensitive locations.
“Our schools should be places where students feel safe to focus on learning, growing, and making friends. Going to school should not be a source of anxiety and fear, making students afraid of being separated from their families,”said Senator Rosen.“As Nevada families begin yet another school year, I’m renewing my call in the U.S. Senate to pass this commonsense bill that protects students and their families from immigration enforcement near schools and other sensitive locations. Nevada families deserve certainty and security, and that’s why I’ll keep fighting to pass this bill.”
Senator Rosen has consistently opposed the Trump Administration’s cruel mass deportation enforcement tactics while championing comprehensive immigration reform. Earlier this year, Rosen urged Senate leadership to pursue meaningfulbipartisan immigration reformthat balances strong border security with protections for Dreamers and law-abiding immigrant families. Senator Rosen has called on the Trump Administration toguarantee legal representationfor unaccompanied children in immigration custody, defending the basic rights of the most vulnerable. Additionally, shecondemnedthe Trump Administration’s decision to revoke a previously authorized TPS extension for Venezuelans.
