Today in a hearing in the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.)secured a commitmentfrom Jim O’Neill – President Trump’s nominee to serve as Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services – to conduct an updated safety review on the chemical abortion drug mifepristone if he were confirmed. The promise comes on the heels of anew studyshowing that1 in 10 womenwho take the drug suffer from adverse health effects.O’Neillagreedwith Senator Hawley that thenew studywarranted review, for the health and safety of women across the nation.“The Secretary [Robert F. Kennedy Jr.] has pledged to do a safety review of mifepristone, and I strongly support that view,”O’Neill said.Senator Hawley has been a staunch advocate for women across the nation, fromintroducing legislationto reinstate safeguards on mifepristone that the Biden Administration eliminated tourging the Department of Justiceto reconsider its position in Missouri’s mifepristone litigation.
