Horsford’s appearance came as The New York Times’ The Daily released an episode examining whether prediction markets constitute gambling, bringing national attention to a harmful practice that will have significant consequences for Nevada’s workers, consumers, and economy. “Nevada’s gaming industry is powered by the people who deal the cards, prepare the meals, clean the rooms, and welcome visitors from around the world. When companies skirt gaming laws by calling sports bets financial products, they put consumers at risk and undermine the industry those workers depend on,” said Rep. Horsford . “We need clear rules that protect consumers, respect state and tribal authority, and safeguard the livelihoods of the people who make Nevada work.” Congressman Horsford and Congressman Mark Amodei (NV-02) introduced the Prediction Markets Are Gambling Act , bipartisan legislation to prevent federally regulated trading platforms from offering sports betting and casino-style gambling under the guise of financial products. The legislation addresses efforts to use federal commodities regulation as a pathway around the gaming oversight established by states and tribal governments. Congressman Horsford is urging Congress to provide clarity as the issue continues through the courts. “Consumer protections must keep pace with the products people can easily access on their phones,” Rep. Horsford continued . “That means meaningful safeguards against underage gambling, accountability for operators, and support for people experiencing gambling harm.
