The DeSaulnier Digest: Join Our Town Halls This Week!
June 15, 2026 DeSaulnier Digest I am back in the East Bay this week and looking forward to our two upcoming town halls - an AANHPI Town Hall in Dublin this Wednesday and a virtual America 250 Town Hall with special guest Jeffrey Rosen this Thursday . Image Image Sincerely, Mark DeSaulnier Member of Congress IN COMMITTEE Mark Highlights Real Issues Facing Schools Amidst Republicans' Political Games Across the country, schools are grappling with serious challenges including gun violence, student mental health, and the dismantling of the Department of Education. However, rather than address these issues, last week the House Education & Workforce Committee held a hearing to baselessly accuse three public school superintendents of misconduct. Rather than giving in to Republicans' eagerness to focus on culture war issues, at the hearing Congressman DeSaulnier discussed the importance of family engagement in education and highlighted the urgent need to support students' mental health. Image ON THE HOUSE FLOOR Congressman DeSaulnier Recognizes Olympic Champion Eddie Hart Congressman DeSaulnier recently spoke on the House floor to recognize Olympic champion sprinter Eddie Hart for his induction into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. After a remarkable collegiate track and field career, Eddie won Olympic gold in the 4 x 100 relay at the 1972 Munich games. Today, he gives back to disadvantaged youth in our community through the Eddie Hart All in One Foundation. In recognition of his achievements and legacy of service, Eddie was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame last month. To see his remarks, click here or on the image below. Image Legislation Considered on the House Floor Last Week Last week, the House of Representatives considered various bills to further balloon the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) budget, strip federal funds from Americans under the guise of combatting fraud, and reauthorize federal surveillance powers without meaningful reforms to protect Americans' civil liberties. More information on these bills can be found below. S. 2 provides $70 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol, funding these lawless agencies through the end of President Trump's term. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's strong opposition, S. 2 passed in the House of Representatives and has been signed into law. H.R. 7892 would give the Department of Education the broad ability to open program reviews against colleges based on little evidence, enabling the Trump Administration to misuse fraud oversight to target certain colleges, students, or states. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition, H.R. 7892 passed in the House of Representatives. H.R. 8312 allows the Trump Administration to further its attacks on Inspectors General (IG) by transitioning certain responsibilities away from the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE), paving the way to undermine or defund that entity. This legislation passed in the House despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition H.R. 8464 could result in delays or cancellations of critical payments from the federal government to states, individuals, and nonprofits, resulting in unnecessary dysfunction and hardship for families. This bill passed in the House of Representatives despite Congressman DeSaulnier's objection. H.Res. 1335 would applaud actions by the Trump Administration to combat fraud while failing to mention the $1.8 trillion slush fund created for the President's supporters, as well as the thousands of corrupt and indefensible pardons granted by the President. This legislation passed in the House despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition. H.R. 9238 would reauthorize federal surveillance authorities without any reforms or guardrails that would prevent the Director of National Intelligence from using his position to target President Trump's perceived enemies. Congressman DeSaulnier voted against this bill, which failed to pass in the House of Representatives. H.R. 5408 would ensure employers are not allowed to drag out negotiations on a first collective bargaining agreement for years. Congressman DeSaulnier voted in favor of this bill, which passed in the House of Representatives and now awaits Senate consideration. POST OF THE WEEK Image BY THE NUMBERS Image
