Schmitt Helps Secure $38.1 Million Tech Hubs Award to Advance Kansas City’s Biomanufacturing Industry

U.S. SENATE — Today, U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) announced that the Kansas City BioHub has been awarded $38.1 million through the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) Tech Hubs Program to accelerate biomanufacturing innovation, strengthen the region’s workforce, and expand America’s domestic biotechnology capabilities. Senator Schmitt supported the Kansas City BioHub’s efforts throughout the competitive selection process and worked to help position the region for this significant federal investment. “This investment is a major win for Kansas City and our nation’s future. The Kansas City region has long been a leader in life sciences and biomanufacturing, and this funding will help strengthen our competitive edge, create high-paying jobs, and drive innovation in an industry that is critical to America’s economic and national security, ” said Senator Schmitt. The $38.1 million award includes: $33.5 million through the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Tech Hubs Program. $4 million in matching investments from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Missouri and Kansas legislatures. $600,000 in social impact funding from the Marion and Henry Bloch Family Foundation. The funding will support projects designed to strengthen the Kansas City region’s biomanufacturing ecosystem by accelerating research and commercialization, expanding workforce development, increasing industry capacity, and attracting additional public and private investment. The federally designated Kansas City BioHub brings together universities, research institutions, private industry, nonprofit organizations, and government partners to position the region as a national leader in biomanufacturing and biotechnology innovation. ###
