Daines Visits Bull Mountains Mine, Lauds Energy Wins in One Big Beautiful Bill

U.S. SENATE –U.S. Senator Steve Daines today visited the Bull Mountains Mine near Roundup, Montana. The mine was under threat of closure, but was kept operational by Daines’ provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill.
“The Bull Mountains Mine provides nearly 250 jobs for hardworking Montanans in Musselshell County and is critical for our nation’s energy independence. I’m proud that my provision to keep this important mine open was signed into law by President Trump in the One Big Beautiful Bill, and it was great to be on site today to receive updates about its operation. Montana plays a huge role in supporting Made-In-America energy and I’ll always fight to further our energy dominance. Keeping the Bull Mountains Mine open is one of many monumental energy wins in the Big Beautiful Bill and our state and our country will be better off because of it,”said Daines.
Background:
The Bull Mountains Mine in Musselshell County is one of three large-scale active coal mines in Montana. The mine was under threat of closure during the Biden administration, but thanks to Daines’ provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill, and actions by the Trump administration, the mine will continue to operate.
Keeping the mine open has been a top Daines priority. In March 2025, Daines introduced a bill, S.362, that  would allow specific sections of federal minerals to be mined in order for the Bull Mountains Mine to keep operating. In January 2025, Daines introduced the“Crow Revenue Act,”which would authorize a mineral swap to help the mine continue operating and support the Crow tribe with additional revenue.
