Senate Approves Hyde-Smith & Warnock Resolution Designating ‘Gold Star Families Remembrance Week’

Friday, September 25, 2026 SENATE APPROVES HYDE-SMITH & WARNOCK RESOLUTION DESIGNATING ‘GOLD STAR FAMILIES REMEMBRANCE WEEK’ Bipartisan Measure Sets Aside Sept. 20-27 to Recognize Families of the Fallen WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate late Thursday approved a resolution introduced by U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) and U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) formally designating Gold Star Remembrance Week to honor the sacrifices made by the families of U.S. military servicemembers who have given their lives in defense of the nation. S.Res.904 , which was approved by unanimous consent, sets Sept. 20-27 as Gold Star Remembrance Week . “Every Gold Star family I meet shows great patriotism and resolve as they deal with the loss of a loved one who died in service to our nation.  Their sacrifices are why the nation takes time to not only honor them, but to reaffirm our commitments to them and the memory of our fallen heroes,” Senator Hyde-Smith said. “I am committed to advancing legislation pending in Congress now to ensure these families’ survivor benefits are protected and improved.” “When America’s bravest answer the call to serve, their entire family joins the mission,” said Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock. “Every day, Gold Star Families embody courage and grace in the face of devastating loss, and their personal sacrifice to our country cannot go unrecognized.  I’m grateful for my Senate colleagues who have come together today to honor those whose loved ones paid the ultimate sacrifice.” The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors ( TAPS ) is among the veterans’ organizations that support the annual resolution. Hyde-Smith on Wednesday met with several TAPS Gold Star Families prior to the Senate acting on her resolution.  At that meeting, she committed to pressing for the Senate to consider and pass legislation she supports, including the Love Lives on Act (S.410) to protect survivor benefits and the Take Care of America's Veterans’ Act (S.4744) – a comprehensive bicameral bill to improve and expand benefits for American veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors. The observance of Gold Star Families Remembrance Week follows Gold Star Mother’s Day, which has been commemorated by presidential proclamation since 1936 on the last Sunday of September.
