Senator Kim Demands Congress Reaffirm Its Constitutional Authority on Military Force Against Iran

WASHINGTON D.C.– Today,Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ)released the following statement after the Senate Republican majority blocked consideration of Senator Tim Kaine’s War Power Resolution which would assert Congress’ constitutional authority on using military force:
“Despite the strikes, Iran still appears to maintain significant uranium stockpiles, and continues to pose a threat. Does President Trump order strikes again if Iran digs out the nuclear sites and tries to enrich uranium stockpiles? Does he try to strike if Iran seeks to rebuild the sites or build new nuclear facilities? The American people deserve to know under what conditions Trump would consider additional strikes and to have a say in whether our country goes to war. By rejecting this resolution, my colleagues are abdicating our responsibility to give voice to Americans, including the military families who will inevitably be put in harm’s way.”
This week, Senator Kim and Senators Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Tim Kaine (D-Va.)announced an amendmentto the War Powers Resolution to make explicit the United States’ ability to continue supporting Israel’s self-defense. The amendment complemented the resolution by reinforcing that the United States can continue to assist Israel and other regional partners in defending their people and territory, including intelligence sharing and defensive cooperation, and take all measures to protect U.S. personnel and facilities in the region.
