Protecting Ohioans from high energy costs
Dear friends and neighbors, As demand for electricity grows, we need to make sure American taxpayers aren’t left footing the bill. In July 2026, I introduced the Ratepayer Protection Act to do just that. My bill would require the tech companies building data centers to pay for the costs they create, including the additional electricity and infrastructure needed to support them. In plain language: If they create the cost, they should pay the price. American families, small businesses, farmers, and seniors shouldn’t open their electric bills and see higher prices because a massive data center is being built in their community. That’s the principle behind my Ratepayer Protection Act. Watch my remarks on the Senate floor here . My Ratepayer Protection Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives in an overwhelmingly bipartisan 417-3 vote on Sept. 16. Last week, I took my bill to the Senate floor and called on my colleagues to do the same thing the House did: work across party lines on an issue that matters to the American people and send this bill to the president’s desk. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats blocked my bill from becoming law. This was a rare bipartisan issue. 417 members of the House supported it. The entire Ohio delegation—Republicans and Democrats—supported it. And a majority of Americans support making sure data centers pay their own costs instead of passing them on to families, farmers, and small businesses. The Senate should have followed the House’s lead. Ohio families shouldn’t pay the price for partisan politics. But I’m not giving up. Ohioans can count on me to continue working to lower energy costs and help you keep more of your hard-earned money. Americans shouldn’t be left to foot the bill for big tech: that’s just common sense. As always, it’s an honor to represent your voice in Washington, and I’ll continue fighting to help make life more affordable for you and your loved ones.
