Senator Kim Statement on Voting No onBill Putting Constitutional Rights at Risk

WASHINGTON D.C.– Today, Senator Andy Kim released the following statement after voting no on cloture on the motion to proceed on S.5, the Laken Riley Act.
“All of us should be in full agreement that individuals who are convicted of committing crimes face consequences, and it is already law that undocumented immigrants that are convicted of felonies face detention and deportation,”said Senator Kim. “But mandating detention for those facing accusations before they go before our judicial system runs counter to our Constitution. I do believe we have to urgently take bipartisan action to fix our broken immigration system, and I stand ready to work across the aisle to get the job done. Let’s start from a foundation grounded in our Constitution.”
Senator Kim is a member of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP); the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and the Special Committee on Aging. Before being elected to the U.S. Senate, Kim represented New Jersey’s Third Congressional District in the U.S. House and was a career public servant working in national security and diplomacy at the White House, State Department, and Pentagon.
