Daines, Cortez Masto Provision Protecting Taxpayer Privacy Rights Passes Senate Finance Committee

“A Serious Crime Demands a Serious Punishment” WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Steve Daines (R-Mont.) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today announced that their provision to protect the privacy of Americans’ taxpayer information passed the Senate Finance Committee and is one step closer to becoming law. The bill would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to increase criminal and civil penalties for unauthorized disclosure of taxpayer information. “Unauthorized disclosure of taxpayer information is a serious crime that demands a more serious punishment. With passage of our bill today out of the Senate Finance Committee, we are one step closer to deterring this serious offense and breach of privacy,” said Daines. “ Today, the Senate Finance Committee voted to protect American taxpayers from bad actors.
