Mike Levin Honors “Father of the Cell Phone” Martin “Marty” Cooper as January 2025 Constituent of the Month Del Mar, CA – Today, Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) announced Martin “Marty” Cooper as his January 2025 Constituent of the Month for his achievements in engineering and telecommunications. Marty is widely considered the “father of the cell phone” for developing the first portable cell phone and making the first public call with a cell phone. He was awarded the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in December. Martin “Marty” Cooper See below for Rep. Levin’s statement recognizing Martin “Marty” Cooper in the Congressional Record: “M. Speaker, it is my great honor to recognize Martin “Marty” Cooper as my Constituent of the Month for January 2025. “You may not know his name, but everyone is aware of his invention. Marty is widely known as the “father of the cell phone.” While working as an engineer at Motorola, Marty led the team that developed the DynaTAC phone, the first portable cell phone. Marty famously used DynaTAC to make the first public call with a cell phone. “Marty was integral in making the cell phone available for consumers. Without him, the way we communicate would be completely different. We have Marty to thank for quick, instant communication available at our fingertips. “Marty represents the best of our country, with his innovative and entrepreneurial spirit. Following the cell phone’s commercial success, Marty went on to found several telecommunications companies and created the Jitterbug phone for seniors. I am grateful for Marty’s work and passion for progress, which has touched all our lives.” ABOUT THE CONSTITUENT OF THE MONTH PROGRAM: Rep.
