Klobuchar, Smith Secure Funding for Projects in Douglas County in Senate-Passed Legislation
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith announced that the Senate approved $1,700,000 in funding to expand the Alexandria YMCA and other facilities as part of 2026 appropriations legislation. This legislation now goes to the House of Representatives for a vote.
“When we invest in childcare and community spaces, we invest in the future of our state. That is why I fought for this funding for the YMCA expansion in Alexandria
,” said Senator Klobuchar.
“The people closest to an issue have the best solutions, and these projects were developed and designed to fit the specific needs of Alexandria and the surrounding community,”
said Senator Smith.
“From creating spaces for our older adults to building a brand-new childcare center, these projects will help strengthen our state.”
The funding would expand and renovate the YMCA by adding and renovating 13,000 square feet to support older adult well-being programs and services, including a new kitchen for community gatherings and senior congregate dining. Additionally, the project includes construction of a 6,000-square-foot stand-alone childcare center in Brandon, MN, which will provide 42 infant, toddler, and preschool spots to rural Douglas County.
This funding was included in the Senate appropriation bill for Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Related Agencies. For these funds to be delivered, the project will still need to be included in the final appropriations bill passed by the House as well and signed into law.
Senators Klobuchar and Smith have been actively involved in securing this federal funding for projects benefiting communities across the state through a process called “Congressionally Directed Spending” (CDS). During the CDS process, Senators Klobuchar and Smith have considered project proposals and advocated for funding in close coordination with leaders from across the state.
