U.S. Senator Katie Britt Champions Senator Jon Husted’s Ratepayer Protection Act, Continues Call to Codify President Trump’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) is continuing her push to codify President Trump’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge. This week, she cosponsored Senator Jon Husted’s (R-Ohio) Ratepayer Protection Act to lower energy prices for Alabamians and ensure families and small businesses aren’t left paying for the energy infrastructure needed to support new data centers. “No family, business, or ratepayer in Alabama should subsidize data centers. President Trump took a bold first step in announcing a Ratepayer Protection Pledge to not only ensure America continues to beat China in the AI race, but also, importantly, to protect consumers. This legislation already passed the House of Representatives with a resounding bipartisan vote, and the Senate must act urgently so we can get this to the President’s desk and signed into law,” said Senator Britt. The Ratepayer Protection Act would require state utility commissions to consider establishing separate rate standards for large electricity users—such as data centers—when considering integrating them onto the grid. It ensures those customers, not families or small businesses, pay for the power generation, transmission lines, and other infrastructure needed to serve their facilities. Without those protections, utilities can shift those costs onto ratepayers through higher monthly electricity bills. In March of 2026, Senator Britt joined President Trump at a White House roundtable to discuss the Ratepayer Protection Pledge. Since then, she has been a leader in calling for Congress to codify President Trump’s pledge. The Ratepayer Protection Act would codify key elements of that pledge. The Senator has discussed energy affordability with other members of the Trump Administration, including Energy Secretary Chris Wright. In a Senate Appropriations hearing earlier this year, she noted, “We have to keep that compute power advantage.
