Kennedy reintroduces bill to give tax relief to teachers, home school families

WASHINGTON – Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), a member of the Senate Banking Committee, today reintroduced the Support Our Educators Act to help teachers and educators keep more of their hard-earned money by providing tax relief for out-of-pocket educational expenses. The Support Our Educators Act would double the amount that elementary and secondary school teachers can deduct from their taxes for certain out-of-pocket classroom expenses. The bill would also extend the same tax deduction to eligible home educators. “Educators shouldn’t have to break the bank to give our kids a good education. The Support Our Educators Act would let them keep more of their hard-earned money while they prepare the next generation for success,” said Kennedy. Qualifying expenses include educational supplies and resources such as books, computers and software. Background: The Support Our Educators Act would: Increase the educator expense deduction from $300 to $600 for an individual and from $600 to $1,200 for married couples who are filing jointly when each spouse is eligible as an educator or as a home educator. Create a home educator expense deduction of $600 for an individual and $1,200 for married couples who are filing jointly when each spouse is eligible as an educator or as a home educator. Kennedy first introduced the Support Our Educators Act in 2024 . Full text of the Support Our Educators Act is available here .
