Rep. Garbarino Introduces Legislation to Rename Medford Post Office in Honor of Decorated Vietnam War Veteran Gunnery Sergeant Ruben Santos
October 16, 2026 Press Release Washington, D.C. – Congressman Andrew R. Garbarino (R-NY-02) introduced legislation to designate the United States Postal Service facility in Medford, New York, in honor of Gunnery Sergeant Ruben Santos, a decorated United States Marine Corps veteran and longtime postal employee who dedicated his life to serving his country and community. Gunnery Sergeant Santos served with distinction during the Vietnam War, earning the Silver Star, one of the nation's highest military decorations for valor in combat, among numerous other honors. Following his military service, Santos continued his commitment to public service through a career with the United States Postal Service, working for many years at the Medford Post Office that the legislation seeks to rename in his honor. "Gunnery Sergeant Ruben Santos was an American hero who dedicated his life to serving our country and his fellow Long Islanders," said Rep. Garbarino. "His bravery and sacrifice during the Vietnam War earned him some of our nation's highest military honors, but his commitment to service did not end when he returned home. He went on to serve the Medford community for years through his work at the local post office. Renaming this facility in his honor is a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to our nation and our community. I'm proud to introduce this legislation to ensure his legacy is remembered for generations to come." Born on February 9, 1940, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Santos passed away on March 30, 2026, at the age of 86 on Long Island. His legacy of military service and dedication to his community continues to be honored by fellow veterans and Long Islanders. Issues : Veterans
