Moskowitz Statement on His Vote Against Republicans’ Disastrous Budget Bill

<p><strong>WASHINGTON, DC</strong>&nbsp;—&nbsp;Today, Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D-FL-23) released the following statement on his vote against House Republicans’ disastrous “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”:</p>

<p><strong>“Republicans’ ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ has nothing ‘beautiful’ about it. It’s a complete disaster. It knocks nearly 2 million Floridians off their health care. It puts food assistance at risk for more than 250,000 Florida families in need. It raises energy costs, wipes out energy jobs, and repeals commonsense clean energy tax credits. It raises the deficit by a whopping $3.4 trillion. And it does all that to pay for giant tax giveaways to billionaires and the wealthiest corporations.</strong></p>

<p><strong>“Republicans wrote this bill behind closed doors, held hearings about it in the dead of night, and refused any input from Democrats in an attempt to hide the damage it’ll do. I voted against this partisan bill the first time it came before the House, and I didn’t hesitate to vote against it today. It’s a massive tax giveaway that our grandchildren will have to pay for all while it guts lifesaving health care by targeting the programs that working families rely on most.”</strong></p>

<p>Among its provisions, this Republican budget bill:</p>

<li><strong>Adds $3.4 trillion to the deficit</strong>, codifying more than $5 trillion in tax giveaways to the wealthy and well-connected while ripping lifesaving health care and food support away from Florida’s working families</li>

<li><strong>Knocks nearly 2 million (1,936,421) Floridians off their health care</strong> in the largest nationwide loss of health care in U.S. history</li>

<li><strong>Increases health care premiums by an average of $550</strong> for Floridians who receive lifesaving care through the Affordable Care Act</li>

<li><strong>Puts food assistance at risk for more than 250,000 Florida families</strong> who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to put food on the table</li>

<li><strong>Repeals clean energy tax credits</strong> that have supported business growth, helped lower energy costs, and smoothed the transition to a clean energy economy</li>

<li><strong>Eliminates an estimated 73,000 manufacturing and energy jobs</strong> in Florida</li>

<li><strong>Raises the cost of energy by an average $610 per year</strong> for Florida families</li>

<li><strong>Threatens Pell grant funding for more than 315,000 students</strong> in Florida who are able to access a more affordable education with support from this program</li>

<li><strong>Allows for the sale of millions of acres of public lands</strong> to open up our lands and waters to drilling and mining</li>

<li><strong>Offers an average $309,000 tax giveaway ($847 per day) for the top 0.1 percent</strong> in a tax scheme that gives 22 percent of the bill’s benefits to the top 1 percent </li>

<li><strong>Fails to fulfill promises</strong> to end taxes on overtime pay and exempt seniors from taxes on their Social Security benefits</li>

<p>Moskowitz was one of the first members of the U.S. House to come out against Republicans’ budget bill. As they sought to push the bill through, Moskowitz&nbsp;<a href="https://moskowitz.house.gov/posts/medicaid-discharge-petition" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">signed onto</a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<em>Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act</em>&nbsp;to force a vote prohibiting House Republicans from using their reconciliation process to cut benefits or remove individuals from Medicaid and SNAP. In their amendment process, Moskowitz further&nbsp;<a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/house-democrats-will-introduce-legislation-noaa-rcna208051__;!!Bg5easoyC-OII2vlEqY8mTBrtW-N4OJKAQ!OpbfWOAqB5V6pEqlVngPFnQ008R2_nFjBytEzdc4v4a7-3UeSK00sIbPxk-3UqmYW1Yti_5ScKSOWJle4-p7VULATFIXSrJzn-s0tg$" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">sought to protect</a>&nbsp;the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) from harmful cuts. Republicans blocked both efforts from coming to the House floor for consideration alongside their bill.</p>
