Rep. Foushee Condemns Supreme Court Decision Weakening Voting Rights Protections

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 29, 2026) — Today, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04) released the following statement after the United States Supreme Court issued a 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais , narrowing key protections under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act: “Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a deeply troubling step backward for American democracy and for the hard-won protections of the Voting Rights Act. For generations, Black communities fought, bled, and organized to secure the fundamental right to have our votes counted fairly and our voices reflected in our elections. By narrowing the scope of Section 2, the Supreme Court has severely weakened one of the last meaningful safeguards against racially discriminatory gerrymandering, stripping away critical protections that prevent states from drawing unfair maps that dilute the voting power of communities of color. “Congress must act with urgency to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act and ensure that no court decision turns back the clock on equal representation. The right to vote is foundational to our democracy—we cannot allow it to be eroded, and we should not accept a future where fair access to the ballot or fair representation is negotiable.” Print Email Share Tweet
