Senate Democrats Block Clean, Short-Term Government Funding Plan

Partisan Democrat Alternate Proposal Adds Over $1 Trillion inUnrelated Priorities
WASHINGTON, D.C. – By a vote 44 to 48, Senate Democrats blocked consideration of a clean, short-term continuing resolution (CR). The bill would continue Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations for federal agencies through Nov. 21 while Congress works on a long-term solution and additional individual appropriations bills.
Members also voted on a CR proposed by Democrats, which failed. It would have drastically increased spending levels and handcuffed President Trump’s ability to enact necessary spending priorities.
U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) issued the following statement after voting in favor of Senate Republicans’ clean bill, and after voting against the Democrats’ partisan measure:
“It’s a little disappointing that we are once again desperately trying to avoid a government shutdown because people would rather play politics than do their jobs. Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll be right back here in two weeks asking a simple question: will Democrats be willing to help keep the doors of government open at current levels, or will Democrats give us another Schumer Shutdown?”
