Rep. Steube Introduces Resolution Supporting Efforts to Prevent IRGC Infiltrating the 2026 World Cup
June 09, 2026 | Press Releases Rep. Steube Introduces Resolution Supporting Efforts to Prevent IRGC Infiltrating the 2026 World Cup WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.) introduced a resolution expressing support for the State Department’s efforts to prevent the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from embedding operatives within the Iranian National Football Delegation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States. “The IRGC is a designated foreign terrorist organization responsible for supporting terrorism, targeting Americans, and destabilizing the Middle East,” said Rep. Greg Steube . “As the United States prepares to host the World Cup, we cannot allow the Iranian regime to exploit this event as an opportunity to place operatives on American soil.” This resolution is co-sponsored by Reps. Mike Bost, Glenn Thompson, Sheri Biggs, Cory Mills, Pat Harrigan, Don Bacon, Randy Fine, Max Miller, and Eli Crane. The resolution supports the Department of State’s efforts to prevent any member, associate, or affiliate of the IRGC from embedding within the Iranian National Football Delegation and supports limiting the delegation’s physical presence in the United States to the shortest period necessary to participate in scheduled World Cup matches. Background: The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is designated by the United States as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and has a documented history of conducting intelligence operations, supporting terrorist proxies, and advancing the Iranian regime’s malign activities abroad. Iran is scheduled to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted in part by the United States. Matches are expected to be held in several American cities, including Miami, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle . Iran’s first scheduled match in the United States will take place in Los Angeles on June 15 . During testimony before Congress last week, Secretary Rubio stated that the Administration would not permit the IRGC to exploit the Iranian delegation as cover for non-athletic personnel , noting that the State Department would closely scrutinize any individuals attempting to enter the country under the delegation.
