View footage from the event HERE . BACKGROUND: Congresswoman Schrier is the first and only pediatrician in Congress, and has lived with Type 1 diabetes for over 40 years. Congresswoman Schrier recently introduced her bipartisan INSULIN Act to cap out-of-pocket insulin costs at $35, or 25% of the list price per month, for all Americans with diabetes. Congresswoman Schrier will additionally serve as the new Democratic Co-Chair of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus in the 120th Congress , where she will continue her work to lower healthcare costs, improve care, and bolster medical research. “Costs across the board are far too high for patients and families in Washington state. As a doctor with Type 1 diabetes, I was so proud to cap insulin at $35 a month for seniors a few years ago. Now I’m working to bring $35 insulin to everyone with the INSULIN Act, and then bring down the cost of other lifesaving medications,” said Congresswoman Schrier. “I was glad to join Overlake Hospital physicians, and T1D leaders and patients to discuss how we can work together to lower the cost of insulin and improve diabetes research, treatment, and self-management. I look forward to continuing my work in Congress to make healthcare more affordable and accessible, and will fight for the passage of my bill to cap the cost of insulin at $35 a month for all Americans with diabetes.” “We see firsthand how high medication costs can affect patients and families,” said Jon Duarte, president and CEO of Overlake Medical Center & Clinics and chief executive of MultiCare’s North Sound region. “Reducing financial barriers will make it easier for people with diabetes to access the medication they need to live their healthiest lives.” "My youngest son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just 13 months old. Now 17 and a junior in high school, he has spent nearly his entire life managing this disease. For those of us with a family member living with T1D, insulin isn't an option or a luxury. It's a necessary part of our families' daily lives and an unavoidable cost of living. I'm thankful for Congresswoman Schrier's leadership on the INSULIN Act, as well as the many dedicated advocates across the T1D community fighting to ensure everyone has affordable access to the insulin they need to live,” said Keith Overa, Breakthrough T1D Greater Northwest Chapter Board of Directors. ### Issues : District Health
