Whitehouse Statement on Republicans’ Judiciary Hearing on Presidential Fitness

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today released the following statement after Senate Republicans held a partisan hearing on presidential fitness focusing exclusively on the previous president and ignoring widespread concern about the current president’s decline: “My Republican colleagues put on a circus hearing to try to distract from the current President’s strange, menacing behavior.  There are widespread concerns about President Trump’s mental acuity and increasing incitements to violence, and his judgment seems to deteriorate with each passing day.  Our Republican colleagues should devote a hearing to the current situation in the Oval Office because when a president winks toward violence, it can put all Americans in danger.”
