Sincerely, Mark DeSaulnier Member of Congress IN COMMITTEE Mark Discusses AI and Student Mental Health From basic chatbots to complex commercial uses, artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly been adopted in schools, homes, and workplaces across the country. Last week, the House Education & Workforce Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development held a hearing to discuss how colleges and universities are implementing AI tools. During the hearing, Congressman DeSaulnier spoke about the impact of technology, including social media and AI, on students' mental health and cognitive development, and why they must be properly regulated​​​​​​​. To listen to his remarks, click here or on the image below.​​​​​​​ Image Congressman DeSaulnier Advocates for Working People The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is the federal agency responsible for protecting the right of private sector workers to form or join a union and collectively bargain over their working conditions. Unfortunately, the independence and effectiveness of the NLRB have been threatened by this Administration, which has unlawfully terminated a member of the Board and eliminated a significant number of the agency’s staff. Last week, the House Education & Workforce Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions held a hearing featuring the Chairman and General Counsel of the NLRB to discuss their leadership at the agency. During the hearing Congressman DeSaulnier questioned the leaders about their commitment to resisting political pressure from the White House and whether they are following ethics and recusal guidelines. Image ON THE HOUSE FLOOR Congressman DeSaulnier Honors Cal Rugby Coach Jack Clark Last week, Congressman DeSaulnier spoke on the House floor to recognize University of California Berkeley's men's rugby head coach Jack Clark for his induction into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. A remarkable athlete himself, Coach Clark has served as the men's rugby head coach at Cal since 1984, leading the team to 31 national championships. In recognition of his extraordinary achievements, Coach Clark was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame last month. To see Congressman DeSaulnier's remarks, click here or on the image below. Image Legislation Considered on the House Floor Last Week Last week, the House of Representatives considered various pieces of legislation that would rein in President Trump's reckless foreign policy, which the Congressman was proud to support. Republicans also put forth bills that would raise costs for Americans and diminish support for crucial social services, all of which Mark opposed. More information on these bills and resolutions can be found below. H.Con.Res. 86 would put a stop to Trump's unconstitutional war in Iran. Congressman DeSaulnier voted in favor of the resolution, which passed the House and now awaits Senate consideration. H.Con.Res. 84 would rein in U.S.-involvement in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Despite Congressman DeSaulnier's support, the resolution failed to pass the House. H.R. 2913 would provide much needed aid to Ukraine and impose sanctions on Russia. The bill passed the House with Congressman DeSaulnier's support and now goes to the Senate for further consideration. H.R. 7726 would give the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services unprecedented authority to withhold all Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) funding from states without cause or due process. This legislation passed the House despite Congressman DeSaulnier's opposition. H.R. 8646 would increase costs and reduce support programs for farmers and rural communities. The bill passed the House despite the Congressman's opposition. CONGRESSIONAL APP CHALLENGE Congressman DeSaulnier will again host the Congressional App Challenge (CAC), a competition for middle and high school students to hone their coding skills by designing original software applications.
