Shaheen Continues “Affordability Action Tour” with Roundtable on Efforts to Lower Household Expenses and Harmful Impacts of Trump Administration Policies on Home Heating Costs

(Rochester, NH) – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) continued her “Affordability Action Tour” with a roundtable discussion on the harmful impacts of the Trump Administration’s energy policies on home heating costs in New Hampshire. Shaheen was joined by fuel delivery companies, advocates and members of Strafford County Community Action Partnership (CAPSC). “Energy costs are always a top concern for families and businesses, especially during New Hampshire’s cold winters,”said Senator Shaheen.“The Trump Administration’s misguided actions are keeping electricity and home heating costs high instead of lowering them, so I appreciated hearing directly from folks on the ground about the challenges they’re facing as a result. With so many Granite Staters already feeling squeezed by the high cost of household expenses, it remains one of my top priorities to protect federal programs that help families lower their energy bills and stay warm in their homes.”
At a time when the cost of living is top a concern, Shaheen has led the charge in Washington to protect federal programs that help Granite Staters afford their energy bills and make energy efficiency updates that save money. Thanks to Shaheen’s efforts, the administrationrecently releaseddelayed federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funding, which more than 57,000 Granite Staters rely on to help pay their home heating bills. Shaheen hascondemned effortsby the Trump Administration to eliminate staff responsible for administering the LIHEAP program.
Shaheen was a key supporter of theInflation Reduction Actand a lead negotiator of theBipartisan Infrastructure Law,legislation that made landmark investments in energy efficiency. In theBipartisan Infrastructure Law,Shaheen helped secure $3.5 billion in additional funding for the Weatherization Assistance Program, including $18 million for New Hampshire. Shaheen has long-championed the Weatherization Assistance Program to lower energy costs for low-income families in New Hampshire, as well as the State Energy Program, which assists states with the development of energy efficiency renewable projects. In December, the New Hampshire delegationcalled onthe Department of Energy to immediately release the remaining $9 million in funding for weatherization from theBipartisan Infrastructure Law. In addition, Shaheen led the delegation in opposing the Environmental Protection Agency’s efforts to terminate a$43 million grant for New Hampshireto support community solar and other solar projects that would reduce residents’ utility bills by 20% or more.
