Reed Statement on Shekarchi Stepping Down as Speaker & New Assembly Leadership
PROVIDENCE, RI -- Today, after Rhode Island House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi announced he is officially stepping down as Speaker in order to apply to fill a vacant seat on the Rhode Island Supreme Court, U.S. Senator Jack Reed issued the following statement: “Joe Shekarchi is an outstanding public servant who has honorably served the people of Warwick with integrity and independence. His experience in elected office and as an attorney were demonstrated throughout his tenure on issues ranging from affordable housing to health care to civil rights. He dealt with incredibly complicated budgetary matters in an even handed manner that resulted in progress on Medicaid rates and a host of matters. As Speaker, his innate decency, ability to create consensus, and legal acumen were on display daily. Joe Shekarchi’s record speaks for itself and I wish him the best as he seeks to continue to use his talents in public service. “I also congratulate the State House’s new incoming leadership. Representatives Blazejewski and Kazarian are experienced legislators dedicated to helping Rhode Island move forward, and I look forward to working with them.”
