Congressman Thompson Announces $19.9 Million Grant for I-55 Pedestrian Mobility and Safety Improvements
January 9, 2025 Press Release BOLTON, MS. – Congressman Bennie G. Thompson is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded a $19,947,355 Local and Regional Project Assistance Grant (RAISE) to the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT). This transformative investment will fund critical pedestrian mobility and safety improvements along the I-55 corridor in Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District. The project will install ADA-compliant sidewalks on the East and West I-55 frontage roads, providing safer pedestrian access to key areas. Enhancements include marked pedestrian crossings, safety signage, crossing push buttons and displays, and improved lighting. Additional improvements will feature glare screen fencing on top of the concrete median of I-55, raised medians with pedestrian refuge islands, and new pedestrian facilities on County Line Road and Briarwood Drive over the interstate.
