New Data: Virginia Families Have Had to Spend $3,900+ More Under President Trump
WASHINGTON— U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) are highlighting a new congressional report finding that Virginia families have paid more than $3,900 extra for goods and services since President Trump took office last year. This new data underscores the growing financial strain on families across the Commonwealth as the president’s devastating economic policies drive up the cost of housing, groceries, gas, electricity, and health care. “Despite repeated promises from President Trump and Republicans to ‘end inflation’ and lower costs, Virginia families continue to get squeezed from every direction. This data confirms what we’ve been hearing from Virginians for months: everyday expenses are getting out of hand,” said the senators. “Between the president’s reckless war with Iran and his disastrous tariffs, families are paying more for everything from gas and groceries to housing and utilities. We’ll keep fighting to reverse these harmful policies, end this unnecessary war, and put more money back in Virginians’ pockets.” This new report details how rising prices are taking a toll on Virginia families, including: Housing Costs Virginia families have had to spend an additional $815 on housing costs such as rent and mortgage payments since President Trump took office. Energy Costs Gas prices have soared since the start of Trump’s war of choice with Iran. In total, people across Virginia have spent an additional $3 billion on gas since the beginning of the war. That has cost the average family in Virginia an additional $935 in gas costs. Families in Virginia spent an additional $170 on electricity in 2025 under President Trump than they did in 2024. In just the first seven months of 2026, they spent an additional $220 on electricity than they did in the first seven months of 2024. Grocery Costs Americans paid an additional $310 for groceries in President Trump’s first year than in 2024, and grocery prices are now more than 4 percent higher than when Trump took office. Beef and coffee prices are hitting Americans especially hard. Since the president took office, the average price of ground beef has risen almost every month to a record high of more than $7 per pound . Coffee prices also spiked and are now more than $9 per pound . Health Care Costs Because of Trump and Republicans’ refusal to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax cuts that help people afford their insurance, monthly premiums for ACA plans rose over 50 percent on average in 2026 compared to last year. Meanwhile deductibles surged to record highs, increasing by more than $1,000 on average . Warner and Kaine are fighting the economic consequences of President Trump’s policies. In September, the senators introduced the End Trump’s Tariff Tax Act , legislation to revoke and refund Trump’s newest barrage of tariffs and rein in the president’s tariff authority by repealing the archaic authorities he has used to continue his trade war. In February, they introduced the Tariff Refund Act of 2026 , legislation to require U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) to quickly refund Trump’s illegal tariffs and prioritize the interests of small businesses when doing so. The senators also underscored the devastating consequences of Trump and Republicans’ budget megabill one year after it became law, including its impact on health care affordability. Sens. Warner and Kaine will continue to press Trump and his administration to end the dangerous and expensive war in Iran, reverse course on their illegal tariffs, and focus on lowering costs and bringing relief to Virginians. ###
