Senator Andy Kim Statement Condemning Trump Administration for Allowing PEPFAR to Expire
WASHINGTON D.C. –Today,Senator Andy Kimreleased the following statement urging the importance of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR):
“The Trump Administration is making a massive mistake in allowing PEPFAR to expire; the consequences of which we will be dealing with for a generation. This is not a political program. It’s not inefficient or ineffective. It’s not waste, fraud or abuse. PEPFAR was started under a Republican president, supported time and again by a broad bipartisan coalition, and is one of the most effective tools America has to save lives starting abroad and ensuring that pandemics don’t reach our shores. Walking away from this isn’t putting America first, it’s showing that America can’t be trusted to do the most basic things. We must do better. We need a new five-year reauthorization immediately to provide the certainty required to tackle these problems and help restore American leadership.”
