Senate Passes Kelly Resolution Honoring Arizona Marine Veteran Nicholas DouglasQuets
Last night, the Senate passed Arizona Senator Mark Kelly’s bipartisan resolution honoring the life and service of Nicholas Douglas Quets , a Tucson-born Marine Corps veteran who was murdered by the Sinaloa Cartel while traveling in Mexico in 2024. The resolution expresses condolences to Quets’ family and loved ones, condemns the violent actions of the Sinaloa Cartel and other transnational criminal organizations, and reaffirms the Senate’s commitment to combating cartel violence. October 18 th will mark two years since Quets’ passing. Earlier this year, Kelly introduced this resolution along with two other bills—the Nicholas Douglas Quets United States–Mexico Rapid Response for Victims of Crime Act and the Nicholas Douglas Quets Border Travel Safety Act —to address gaps in traveler safety and cross-border coordination highlighted by Quets’ murder. “Nicholas served his country with honor, and his loss is a tragedy. This resolution is one way to keep fighting for justice for him and for Americans everywhere. It’s good to see this get one step closer to the finish line,” said Kelly. “But we’re not done. I won’t stop pushing to get my other two bills passed so no other family experiences what the Quets family has.” “We wish to publicly express our deepest gratitude to Senator Kelly and his staff for championing a resolution honoring the life and service of our beloved son, United States Marine Corps veteran Nicholas Douglas Quets. Nick was targeted by Sinaloa Cartel cowards and killed during a failed carjacking on October 18, 2024. In our darkest hours, Senator Kelly was among the first to reach out—not just to offer condolences, but to actively discuss how to protect other families from enduring this devastating grief. He followed through by introducing two crucial pieces of legislation aimed at safeguarding Americans. The Senate’s passage of the resolution is a meaningful step toward ensuring Nicks’ legacy lives on. By securing bipartisan support from Arizona Representatives Crane, Ciscomani, and Stanton, Senator Kelly has demonstrated the exact type of cooperative, country-over-party leadership that Americans crave. Thank you, Senator, for placing your constituents above politics and for honoring the sacred warrior ethos of leaving no man behind,” said Warren Douglas Quets, Jr., Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired) and Patricia M. Quets, parents of USMC Veteran Nicholas Douglas Quets. Representatives Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ-06), Greg Stanton (D-AZ-04), and Eli Crane (R-AZ-02) are introducing companion legislation in the House of Representatives. Read to full resolution here .
