Oct 28, 2025 | comments Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) has co-sponsored legislation—the Keep SNAP Funded Act of 2025 ( HR 5822 )—to appropriate unallocated federal funds to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of benefits under the supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP) during the current shutdown. “I, alongside many of my Republican colleagues in the House—including Reps. Jeff Van Drew and Tom Kean— voted to keep the government up and running so that we could avoid the potentially tragic outcomes posed by unnecessary government shutdowns, such as this,” said Smith. “As Democrats continue to vote ‘no’ in reopening the government, more than 42 million Americans could see their SNAP benefits paused as soon as November 1 st —this Saturday—all due to the ongoing, Democrat-driven government shutdown,” said Smith. “Our legislation will enable the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to keep SNAP available, making sure that millions of vulnerable Americans, including the approximately 18,823 SNAP households in my congressional district, do not go hungry during this difficult time.” ### f t #
