Klobuchar, Smith Secure Childcare Funding for Grand Rapids in Senate-Passed Legislation

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith announced that the Senate approved $315,000 for the KOOTASCA Community Action’s Early Childhood Hub and Community Center in Grand Rapids as part of the 2026 appropriations legislation. This legislation now goes to the House of Representatives for a vote.
“When we invest in childcare, we invest in the future of our state. That is why I fought for this funding to make improvements to the KOOTASCA Early Childhood Hub,”
said Klobuchar.
“Access to affordable childcare is essential, because it gives parents the freedom to pursue their careers and contribute to the economy, and it supports the safe and healthy development of our kids,”
said Smith. “
This investment in Grand Rapids would make improvements to KOOTASCA’s community center that will help families get much needed childcare services.”
The funding would be used to replace the deteriorating main water line, which is essential to ensuring the health, safety, and long-term sustainability of this regional childcare center. The center serves 174 children and their families. This funding was included in the Senate appropriation bill for Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Related Agencies. For these funds to be delivered, the project will still need to be included in the final appropriations bill passed by the House as well and signed into law.
Senators Klobuchar and Smith have been actively involved in securing this federal funding for projects benefiting communities across the state through a process called “Congressionally Directed Spending” (CDS). During the CDS process, Senators Klobuchar and Smith have considered project proposals and advocated for funding in close coordination with leaders from across the state.
