Shaheen Delivers Remarks at Nursing Workforce Celebration, Visits Marguerite’s Place to Discuss Housing, Child Care, Federal Funding Delays

(Nashua, NH) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH),a senior member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee,joined a nursing workforce celebration at Elliot Hospital and visited Marguerite’s Place in Nashua to discuss housing, child care and federal funding delays.Photos from today’s events can be foundHERE.
In Manchester, Shaheen delivered remarks at Elliot Hospital in celebration of its Granite State Partners program to expand New Hampshire’s nursing workforce. Shaheen was joined by U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Elliot Hospital leadership and community partners.
“It was great to be able to join the Elliot Hospital community in celebrating a program that is successfully tackling our state’s nursing workforce shortages,”said Senator Shaheen.“I’m glad to see hospitals, medical centers and higher education leaders stepping up to address state-wide health care challenges. In the wake of devastating cuts to health care in the Republican Big Beautiful Betrayal, it will be more important than ever for New Hampshire to have robust training programs that can support health care needs in our communities.”
The nursing workforce expansion was made possible by a$3 million U.S. Department of Labor grantthat Shaheen and the New Hampshire Congressional delegation helped secure to support nursing training programs and increase the pipeline of nursing professionals. Earlier in the month, Shaheen attended a ribbon-cutting at Saint Anselm College’s new nursing school building, a project which shesecured $2.5 million in Congressionally Directed Spendingfor.
In Nashua, Shaheen visited Margeurite’s Place to tour its facility and learn more about the supportive services they provide. The facility is in the process of creating more transitional housing and a Family Resource Center in Nashua. Shaheen worked to include federal funding for the project in the Committee-approved Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill. However, due to delays in the bipartisan federal appropriations process, the funding has been left in limbo.
“Marguerite’s Place is a lifeline, giving families a second chance by providing women and their children with housing and the peace of knowing that their children are being cared for,”said Senator Shaheen.“With the high cost of housing and child care top of mind for so many Granite Staters, I was proud to support Congressionally Directed Spending to help the facility expand its transitional housing offerings. I’m going to keep advocating in Washington to get this funding over the finish line for the Granite Staters who are counting on these services in their times of need.”
Senator Shaheen has been a leader in addressing the affordability crisis, including by advocating for more affordable housing and accessible, quality child care. Shaheen recentlyattended a ribbon-cuttingfor a new Coos County Family Health Services domestic violence shelter in Berlin. In April, Shaheenvisited the YMCA of Greater Nashua’s Merrimack Branchto highlight the Granite State’s shortage of child care providers and to discuss her recent legislative efforts to address the child care affordability crisis. Shaheen has also been vocal in opposing the Trump administrationattacks on Head Start. Shaheen also leads and has helped introduce a number of bills to respond to the nation’s child care shortages, including her signature, bipartisanExpanding Child Care for Military Families Act.
