Senator Collins Visits Community Development Projects Across York County

ALFRED, ME – Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins visited three community development projects across York County that were supported by a combined $7,368,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) she secured in the past five years through her role on the Senate Appropriations Committee. These projects include a substance abuse recovery center and first responder training facility in Alfred and a municipal building in Hollis. Since 2021, Senator Collins has secured nearly $1.5 billion for 672 targeted community development projects across each of Maine’s 16 counties. “Days like today are a terrific reminder of all the good that is possible for our state when seniority on the Appropriations Committee is used to deliver targeted funding for tangible, lasting improvements in communities where they would otherwise be out of reach,” said Senator Collins. “With these three projects, York County communities will have expanded access to substance use disorder treatment to address the negative impacts of the opioid and fentanyl crises, a dedicated facility to train more first responders to better keep our communities safe, and a new municipal building to better serve residents of Hollis and give the town a beautiful central gathering space. Senator Collins began the day with a tour of the York County Regional Substance Abuse Recovery Center, which is currently under construction. She secured nearly $2 million in CDS to support construction of the center and the purchase of equipment for the facility, which will serve 29 cities and towns and include 60 beds and provide a “one roof” model of care offering observation beds, detox beds, and residential and outpatient treatment for individuals struggling with substance use disorder and other mental health conditions. More than 100 Mainers attended the event, including local first responders, fire and police chiefs, York County officials, York County Community College leadership, and public safety instructors and students. Senator Collins secured $3.4 million in CDS for the construction of the facility and the purchase of EMS, fire, and police training equipment. The center will serve as a central hub for coordinated training and education for first responders across York County. Senator Collins concluded her day with a visit to Hollis to tour the newly completed municipal building alongside Town Manager Richard Morin, Select Board members, and other local officials involved in the construction project.
