Box Fan Giveaway in El Paso
El Paso, Texas- Today, Senator César J. Blanco hosted a “Beat the Heat” Senior Box Fan
Giveaway at the McKinley Facility in Central El Paso, where 60 box fans were distributed to
economically disadvantaged senior citizens.
With high temperatures during the summer months, this initiative aims to assist economically
disadvantaged senior citizens keep their homes cool and help reduce electric bills.
According to Harvard Medical School, more than 80% of the estimated 12,000 individuals in the
United States who succumb to heat-related causes annually are aged 60 and above. Because
older people tend to have more chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease, elevated
temperatures make it harder to cool off the body. Medicines that many older people use to treat
chronic ailments, such as diuretics for high blood pressure, can also make them more vulnerable
to the heat.
Senator César J. Blanco issued the following statement:
“Helping our seniors stay safe and save money during the extreme summer heat is a top priority.
For older adults living on fixed incomes, high electricity bills can be a serious burden.
“This fan giveaway is about easing that financial strain, giving seniors a way to stay cool without
having to worry about rising energy costs. I’m proud to continue this annual tradition and to work
with our local partners to provide real, practical support for our community’s most vulnerable
residents.”
