Honoring the Legacy of Sheriff Germond
Image May 30, 2026 e-Newsletter Archive Honoring the Legacy of Sheriff Germond I was honored to attend and speak at the dedication of the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office, which was renamed to honor the legacy of longtime Sheriff Richard L. Germond, who passed away last year. Sheriff Germond was an impactful member of our community, devoting 44 years to law enforcement, including serving as sheriff for 36 years. When he left law enforcement in 2000, he was the longest-serving Sheriff in Michigan and the longest-serving Sheriff in Lenawee County. Last year, I took to the House floor to honor former Sheriff Germond and recognize his heroism. The dedication of the Sheriff Richard L. Germond Building will honor his legacy and ensure his impact on our community will be felt for generations to come. Standing Up for Our Veterans On Memorial Day, I enjoyed attending the Salute to Service program and baseball game in Adrian to honor the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of our nation's veterans. They have sacrificed so much for our freedoms, and we owe them a debt of gratitude. The House recently passed two pieces of legislation to uphold our commitment to our veterans. The Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act would prevent veterans from being unjustifiably stripped of their 2nd Amendment rights. The Sharri Briley and Eric Edmundson Veterans Benefits Expansion Act will deliver a long-overdue increase in financial support for severely disabled veterans and Gold Star families to provide meaningful relief to those who have given so much for our nation. Recognizing Local Students I enjoyed stopping by the Boys and Girls Club of Lenawee to honor the club's 2026 Youth of the Year, Honesty. Honesty is a freshman at Adrian High School and has demonstrated remarkable leadership and service. Congratulations, Honesty, on this amazing accomplishment, and thank you to the Boys and Girls Club for providing the next generation of leaders with academic support, leadership skills, and many different development opportunities! Securing the Border This past month marked a full year of zero releases at our nation's border . After years of open-border chaos, House Republicans have reversed course, restoring law and order. Last year, President Trump signed into law the Working Families Tax Cuts, which provided the largest border security investment in history . This historic legislation funded the construction of the border wall, implemented advanced surveillance technology, and hired additional CBP personnel to prevent deadly fentanyl from flowing into our communities and prevent illegal border crossings. As a result, border crossings this entire fiscal year to date were lower than the monthly average for the last 30 years.
