Congressman Pat Harrigan Votes to Strengthen Federal Fraud Enforcement

September 16, 2026 Press Release Contact: Lexi Kranich (814) 380-4408 WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) voted for H.R. 9576 , the National Fraud Enforcement Division Act of 2026, legislation establishing a dedicated National Fraud Enforcement Division within the Department of Justice to strengthen the federal government’s ability to combat fraud and protect taxpayer dollars. “Fraud has changed dramatically, but the way the government goes after it hasn’t kept pace,” said Congressman Harrigan. “Criminals can move money, steal identities, and exploit weaknesses in our systems faster than ever before, while federal enforcement is often spread across different offices and agencies. Americans deserve a government that can keep up, and creating a dedicated fraud division at the Department of Justice is a commonsense step toward doing that.” The National Fraud Enforcement Division Act establishes a permanent National Fraud Enforcement Division within the Department of Justice under the authority of the Attorney General. The division will be led by an Assistant Attorney General for National Fraud Enforcement, appointed by the President, providing a dedicated leadership structure within DOJ for federal fraud enforcement. The legislation also subjects the new division to federal restrictions on political activity, ensuring the officials responsible for carrying out its work are held to the same standards governing political activity that apply to other key components of the Department of Justice. Having passed the House, the National Fraud Enforcement Division Act now heads to the Senate for consideration.
