WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee (RPC), spoke in support of the Tuberville-Blackburn amendment to theSAVE America Act, which ensures fairness in women’s sports by prohibiting biological males from competing in female athletics.
Senator Capito’s remarks as prepared for delivery:
“As you all know, we’ve been debating theSAVE America Actthis week.
“While much of the focus of the bill is on protecting the integrity of our elections, there is another provision in this bill that I feel very strongly about, and that is ensuring fairness in women’s sports by prohibiting biological males from competing in female athletics.
“I played a college sport and so did my daughter. This issue hits home for me.
“Let me be clear: This is about fairness, and it’s about preserving a level playing field for women and girls who have worked hard, trained hard, and deserve the chance to compete on equal terms.
“Biological women competing alongside biological men is anything but fair.
“When biological males compete in women’s sports, that fairness is compromised, opportunities are taken away, and in some cases, young women may simply choose not to participate at all.
“We’ve made too much progress over the years in expanding opportunities for women in sports to start moving backwards.
“Standing up for our female athletes should be a given. It shouldn’t be a Republican or Democrat issue. It’s common sense.
“Whether you’re from West Virginia like me, or anywhere else in this country, folks understand the importance of fairness and equal opportunity.
“That’s exactly what this provision does in theSAVE America Act, and that’s one of the reasons I’m proud to support it.”
