Slotkin Statement on President Trump’s Proposed Tariffs

U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) released the following statement regarding President Trump’s reciprocal tariffs:
“
The true impact of the tariffs President Trump announced today on Michigan’s economy will take weeks to assess. And that’s before each of the dozens of nations retaliates with new tariffs of their own.
“Tariffs only work when they’re used strategically. This chaotic approach to American trade policy, and the clear effects on American supply chains, at first blush appear to fail that test.
“America needs a 21st century trade policy that strengthens the Middle Class, expands American industry and jobs, provides certainty to American businesses and farmers, and uses our economic levers of power against our adversaries like China – not allies like Canada.
“At best, President Trump’s blanket actions today seem set to inevitably raise costs for Michiganders. At worst, they further us down the road to recession. Neither of these options are one Michiganders can afford.”
