Durbin Discusses Trump Administration’s Cuts To Snap, Impact On Chicago Families

May 07, 2026 Durbin Discusses Trump Administration’s Cuts To Snap, Impact On Chicago Families CHICAGO – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today visited Common Pantry to hear about the impact of Republicans’ so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act on SNAP benefits received by Chicago families. Forty-two million Americans, including two million Illinoisans, receive SNAP benefits. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act cut SNAP by nearly $200 billion, the biggest cut in history. Starting this month, up to 150,000 Illinoisans could lose their benefits. “When prices at the grocery store are higher than ever and we are facing historic cuts to SNAP benefits, food insecurity can impact families regardless of income,” said Durbin. “Organizations like Common Pantry are a lifeline for the community, especially in the face of historic cuts from the Trump Administration. I am grateful for their continued service to Chicagoans.” "Common Pantry is doing everything possible to help advocate, support and provide resources to our guests or the everyday people who have never needed a food pantry until now. We provide nutritious food, nutrition education and social services to help our neighbors in need and will continue our mission with determination, as demand increases because of the policy changes to SNAP now in full effect,” said Margaret O'Conor, Executive Director of Common Pantry. -30- Print Email Share Tweet
