REP. Thompson, House Democrats Introduce Taxpayer DATA Protection ACT

February 7, 2025 Press Release LEGISLATION ENSURES TRUSTED PUBLIC SERVANTS, NOT ELON MUSK, CAN ACCESS PERSONAL INFORMATION Washington – Today, Representative Mike Thompson (CA-04) joined House Democrats to introduce the Taxpayer Data Protection Act. This legislation is a direct response to officials from the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) having recently been granted access to taxpayers’ data stored by the Treasury Department. This legislation will stop people with conflicts of interest or without a security clearance from accessing the highly sensitive Treasury Department payment system — which is responsible for Social Security and Medicare benefits. "Your private information — everything from bank account routing numbers to Medicare records detailing what prescriptions you take — has been breached by Elon Musk and his cadre of teenage interns. This is wrong," said Representative Thompson. “I've co-sponsored the Taxpayer Data Protection Act to protect American’s sensitive personal information and so that Congress can hold the Administration accountable. "If passed, the Taxpayer Data Protection Act will curb corruption and protect privacy by ensuring that only trusted public servants without conflicts of interest and with appropriate security clearances can access the Treasury Department’s most sensitive systems." The text of the legislation is here . Issues : Fiscal Responsibility Jobs & Economy
