King Releases Statement on Congressional Efforts to Curtail ICE Enforcement Efforts in Maine and Across the Country

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) released the following statement on the latest congressional efforts to curtail Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities in Maine and across the country:
“After what we saw from ICE in cities across the country, there is no doubt that Congress must act to implement guardrails to prevent further harm to the American people. Therefore, the essence of the Democrats’ proposal is simply to subject ICE to the same standards of conduct already applicable to every police force in the country—like no masks, identification, judicial warrants, body cameras, independent investigations of the use of force, and no racial profiling.
“These are serious questions—as we know from our first-hand experience here in Maine—which deserve serious consideration.
“I hope that in the next few days, my Republican colleagues will come to the table in good faith; this is not that complicated—simply apply to ICE the same rules that apply to the police in Portland, Omaha, Cleveland and virtually every other community in America.”
