Bonamici, Moore Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Safely Dispose Opioids
October 1, 2026 Press Release WASHINGTON, DC [10/1/26] – Representatives Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) and Riley M. Moore (R-WV) introduced bipartisan legislation to help people securely and safely dispose of unnecessary prescription medication. The Safe Disposal of Opioids Act aims to stop prescription drug abuse by establishing a national grant program to install and maintain roughly 10,000 secure disposal receptacles across the country. These drop boxes will be conveniently located throughout healthcare facilities and community pharmacies where patients pick up their prescriptions, providing an easy way to dispose of excess medication. "Providing a safe, easy way to get rid of unused medication is something we can do right now to protect families and neighbors across Oregon and the country," said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. "When people have a convenient place in their community to drop off leftover opioids, it keeps medication out of the wrong hands, reduces the risk of abuse, and gives everyone peace of mind. This bipartisan legislation will make a real difference in keeping homes and neighborhoods safe." “The dangerous scourge of opioids has devastated communities across West Virginia, more than anywhere else across the country,” said Congressman Riley M. Moore. “We must do everything we can to keep these deadly drugs off our streets and prevent unused opioids from being diverted for abuse. I’m proud to be the Republican leader on the Safe Disposal of Opioids Act, and I support commonsense solutions that help protect our families and communities.” The grant program is funded through a fee imposed on pharmaceutical manufacturers that produce opioids. The legislation includes a rebate program to prevent the cost from being passed on to patients in hospice or with cancer who rely on opioid medication for pain management. Bonamici first introduced this bipartisan bill in 2018 based on feedback she got while hosting a series of community discussions about the opioid crisis in NW Oregon. ### Issues : Health Care
