U.S. Senator Katie Britt Celebrates Unanimous Senate Passage of TREY’s Law

Speaks on Senate Floor Ahead of Passage WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) today spoke on the Senate floor ahead of unanimous Senate passage of the Terminating Restrictive Enforcement of Youth Settlements (TREY’s) Law . Senator Britt is a lead sponsor of the bill along with Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas). TREY’s Law will now  go to the U.S. House of Representatives before heading to the President’s desk to be signed into law. Excerpts of her remarks can be viewed below and a video can be viewed here . “Mr. President, I rise today to stand with Senator Cruz. Senator Cruz’s leadership on this important issue has led us to today, today where I am hopeful that the Senate will provide a unanimous vote for TREY’s Law. “As a parent, I cannot imagine my child enduring that and then that child being forced into silence. It should never happen again. Victims should be in control of when and where and if they tell their story, they should never be silenced or sidelined. TREY’s law has built momentum across the country. That’s because, as Senator Cruz will tell you, of Elizabeth Carlock, Trey’s sister, who has fought tirelessly to ensure that this never happens to another individual and another family ever has to endure this pain … “I’m very proud that Alabama has led the way. Alabama passed TREY’s law, along with a number of other states. And in our state, Representative David Faulkner and State Senator Matt Woods ensured that TREY’s law was signed by Governor Ivey into law. Today, we ask our colleagues to join us in this commonsense and bipartisan piece of legislation that will ensure that no victim of child sexual abuse will ever be silenced. “I urge the House to pass this bill and to send it to President Trump’s desk. Look, there are a lot of times that we’re out and we’re talking to people in our states. We hear from constituents. We hear stories that tug at our heart strings. I commend Senator Cruz, Senate Judiciary Committee, and certainly proud to be a part of that for actually doing something about the tragedies that are facing everyday Americans. “Today, let’s honor Trey’s memory. Let’s ensure that abusers are not protected. Let’s ensure that victims have a voice, and let’s prevent tragedies like this from ever happening again.” TREY’s Law voids non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) that silence survivors of child sexual abuse and is named in memory of Trey Carlock, who was silenced by such an NDA after experiencing sexual abuse at a Kanakuk Ministries camp. This led to Trey being retraumatized by a civil ligation process related to the abuse, and ultimately his death by suicide at age 28. TREY’s Law is supported by the American Association for Justice, Prevent Together – The National Coalition to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation, Protect Our Children, National Children’s Alliance, Tim Tebow Foundation, Unsilenced, Joyful Heart Foundation, Children’s Justice Campaign – Enough Abuse, Zero Abuse Project, Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas, and Rights4Girls.
