Gallego Pledges to Block All Republican-Led House Bills Until Johnson Takes Action on Bipartisan Housing Bill

Senator Gallego is planning to block unanimous consent on all Republican-led House bills that come before the Senate until Speaker Johnson delivers the bipartisan, bicameral 21st-Century ROAD to Housing Act to the White House. WASHINGTON – Today, Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) , a member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, spoke at a press conference urging President Trump to sign the 21st-Century ROAD to Housing Act . The historic legislation to boost housing supply and affordability passed out of both chambers of Congress earlier this week. Despite months of negotiations, strong bipartisan support for the legislation, and a planned signing ceremony, President Trump is refusing to sign the bill into law. “America is hurting right now. America really wants the ability to have stability. Let me tell you, it matters. I didn’t have the best of housing situations growing up. For many years, I had to sleep on the floor, but my mom had one apartment that kept us all in the same school district for eight years for four kids. That made a difference,” said Senator Gallego . “There are millions of Americans that are just trying to have that same amount of stability, and we, Democrats and Republicans, tried to bring that today, but the President is standing in the way, and is being encouraged by some House Republicans.” For the legislation to move forward, House Speaker Mike Johnson must formally deliver the bill to the White House. From there, President Trump can either sign the bill into law or veto it. If Trump refuses to act, the bill will become law after ten days, so long as Congress does not adjourn during that time. If Speaker Johnson does not formally present the bill, it remains in limbo. “So, to encourage some movement over there, I’m going to block all Republican bills that they try to bring to the Senate through [unanimous consent],” Senator Gallego concluded.
